To be honest the Douglas Carswell defection and by-election stunt hardly came as a total surprise but its timing certainly made us sit up and take notice.
Douglas has been a renegade Tory Independent for some time and to the Right of the party. But this certainly shakes things up for Cameron just as we was probably hoping to have a united Party to take on Labour in a general election only months away.
I see the early betting is that Carswell will win and become the 2nd UKIP MP (any body remember Bob Spinks?) and I probably think they are right.
I was only thinking the UKIP bandwagon was slowly grinding to a halt but now this has certainly made the next few week really interesting!
