Having been involved in AstraZeneca through their research facility in Loughborough for 15 years I am struck by the size and scale of these takeovers. The ability of AZ to close the Loughborough site despite spending £500m in the town was a major blow locally – but a strategic decision globally. We suffered the consequences of global capitalism with the loss of those 1200 jobs. They have not been properly replaced.
